This week, I had the privilege of speaking with our own Anne Schuchman about her inspiring work with the Guadalupe Resale Shop. Originally from Indianapolis, Anne has always been committed to volunteerism. After moving to Naples permanently, she was eager to find a way to contribute her time. She first became involved with the Guadalupe Resale Shop after donating a variety of furniture from her home up north. Looking for a way to stay engaged, Anne inquired if there was a need for volunteers. Without hesitation, Anne agreed to become a cashier—a role that she’s now been fulfilling for some time. In Anne's words: “Everybody who works there is just terrific. I have not met anybody who I didn’t think was outstanding.” The interactions she has with customers bring her immense joy, particularly when the shop is quieter, and she can take time to truly connect with people. As some individuals return week after week, she learns their story and they learn hers, which has allowed meaningful relationships to form with both the customers and the volunteers.
The Guadalupe Resale Shop, while open throughout the week, hosts special "Shopping Sundays"—an exclusive event where members of various communities can shop in a relaxed, welcoming environment. During these events, the store offers refreshments and features a curated selection of higher-quality items, from men's and women's clothing to furniture, kitchenware, and household items. This unique event helps the shop raise funds for the Guadalupe Center's mission to break the cycle of poverty through education for the children of Immokalee. Anne shares her admiration for the impact the Guadalupe Center has on local youth: “This organization helps these kids get a head start on life.” From preschool through high school, the children, teens, and young adults who benefit from this program are given the tools they need to succeed. Anne highlights the incredible success stories, with many former students going on to pursue college degrees and returning to Immokalee to give back to their community. Many of these young people have gone on to become doctors, professionals, and leaders—and it all started with the foundation provided by the Guadalupe Center.
The money raised through the shop directly benefits the educational programs that allow these young minds to thrive. Anne sums it up perfectly: “I can’t put a price on everything that has been done for those children. We’re helping them to become better citizens of our world.” This event at The Guadalupe Resale Shop is a perfect example of how one organization can make a world of difference, one Sunday at a time.
